I love figuring things out. [Jul. 30th, 2004|01:37 pm]
Yesterday, I spent a lot of time on the phone, knitting in my head. I had an idea to make a double-knit baby blanket or two for some of my pregnant friends, but I wasn't sure quite how the technique worked. I tried out several possible ideas and finally settled on one that I thought would work. Then, when I had time, I looked it up online. Yep! I was right!

I love it when that happens.

So when I got home, grabbed my test yarn (crap acrylic, of course, bleah) and made a small double-knit weird thing. It's black and hot pink, and ugly as hell, but it's double knit! ha!

The silk garden sweater is coming along. I'm about 4 inches past the armpit.

finished objects! [Jul. 28th, 2004|05:09 pm]
I got a pile of Oxygen (I really like this stuff -- too bad it's discontinued) from patternworks some time ago, fairly cheap. I looked at my pile, and figured that I had enough to make a poncho. So, I cast on and made a poncho:

I had about a skein of black left over, plus 2 skeins of this really bright orange that just wouldn't have looked good with the muted colors of the poncho, so I made a little halter top (using up just about every last bit of the yarn, too, so it's short enough that my fat belly hangs out a tad). Made up an intarsia pattern, and dove right in:

Still on the needles (or in need of finishing):
  • watermelon baby set (inspired by someone here, who did a watermelon baby hat that I just loved, and also pink cotton being on sale)
  • silk garden sweater (just started, really)
God. there may be more. I have a couple things I started and then frogged completely and stuffed in a drawer somewhere, as well.

devil kitty top [Jul. 22nd, 2004|04:36 pm]
I finished this up last night -- seamed up the back, wove in all my ends, and used the very last of the o2 to make a strap.

it's a little big. I forget that when i make halters or things like that, not to make the whole thing big enough for my tits; just the top half. the rest can be much smaller. still, it's fuckin' adorable. I will take pictures tonight.

shows off my fat belly, which I think is a fine thing.

still working on the baby stuff. and just found out that ANOTHER friend is pregnant. I will never stop knitting baby stuff, will I? Still, I know what kind of stuff this friend's getting -- baby pirate clothes! arrrrrrrrr!

forgot to mention [Jul. 20th, 2004|11:15 am]
I used the leftover oxygen to make a little tank. it's black and orange, so i intarsia'd a kitty head in the middle. looks a little like a devil, so I'm going to put whiskers on it as part of my finishing it up. I'm all proud of myself; I did short rows to shape it without a pattern or nuthin'! woohoo! it's really cute.

it'll be warm; it's not the best yarn for the style of top, but I had this yarn and didn't really know what to do with it. however, it's pretty loosely-knit, so it'll breathe, and it's only 50% wool... :) I suppose I could frog and turn it into a devil-kitty bag or something.

watermelon baby sweater [Jul. 20th, 2004|08:48 am]
is all knit up. soooo cute.
need to weave in all my damn ends, close up the underarm holes, put the buttons and seeds on.
need to weave in ends on hat, put seeds on.
need to weave in ends on bootie, put seeds on.
need to knit up second bootie.

silly me, I decided I'd see if I had enough pink to make a blanket; started it yesterday. Thought it would be cute to make it round, but soon discovered that round is going to use a lot more yarn than square, so it's going to be square. frogged an 8" diameter circle, started over this morning. should be cute.

bought some incredibly soft llama yarn at the Orcas/Eastsound farmer's market this weekend. not a lot, just enough for some accents on a hat or something, but it was irresistable.

Interesting experience: went to the market, saw the pretty yarn, went, "oooo, pretty yarn!" and headed over there. There were two women sitting and spinning, who basically just looked up and smiled; i was just another knittin' tourist. One of the women was using some amazingly cool colors, so I said, "I just love the colors you used on the roving," and that seemed to be a magic word or something, because all of a sudden they opened up an started being all chatty about what they were spinning up, and pulling out other things to show me that they were working on (not for sale stuff), etc etc. It was kind of amusing.

    woohoo [Jul. 15th, 2004|10:38 am]
oxyponcho done! I just need to weave in all my ends. shouldn't take too long; I'll work on that tonight. I had JUST enough yarn to make it the PERFECT length. I think I'm going to pick up more O2 from elann.com (it's something like 3 or 4 bucks a skein there, since it's discontinued) and make a real sweater out of it. with sleeves and everything.

i had 1 skein of black and 2 skeins of orange left over (the orange just didn't GO with the lovely muted greys and purples and greens which made up most of the rest of it) so I'm making a little top. black garter border top and bottom, orange middle, intarsia kitty head smack dab in the center. adorable, if I do say so myself. I hope I have enough black. I should.

still plugging away on the watermelon baby sweater. working on the bottom edge ribbing right now; just about two more rows to go and then I can bind off. I should be able to finish that on the bus this afternoon. Then I get to do the sleeves, and then I get to do one more booty and a blanket and put seeds on everything. That's the part I'm not looking forward to. :P (I think I'm going to basically tie them on -- make it look like duplicate stitch on front, then tie in back so they'll stay put)

I think I figured out what I'm going to do with the lovely blues/greens silk garden I got some time ago.

Haven't gotten my kureyon color 12 in the mail yet, dammit. I want to finish my booga bag!

I think I'm going to go buy myself a new digital camera now.

    progress. [Jul. 13th, 2004|02:33 pm]
ripped out the collar on the oxygen poncho because it was too tight and too long (it's a learning experience, hey?) and re-did it (changed the color, too. it was in the green, of which I had only 1 skein, and I had something like 5 skeins of the purple, which has become the dominant color of this thing. so the neck/collar is purple, and i'm saving a skein of purple for the bottom stripe. I like how the colors are working out. the stripes aren't all the same width, so it looks more natural and pleasing.

still working on the watermelon sweater, which is slow going because I'm only working on it while on the bus. I purl too slowly. Must look at norwegian purl instructions and learn that, since I can't seem to get the hang of normal continental purling.

got more small tubu from that ebay lady, yay! more hats!

    updates [Jul. 12th, 2004|12:10 pm]
working on watermelon baby sweater, mark 3. i think this time, it'll work.

i learn a lot from re-writing patterns, yes i do!

last night, i decided to finally do something with all of the O2 I have lying around, so I started a poncho. it's damn quick knitting, i'll say that much. (O2 is a knitted tape yarn, about 1 cm wide, 1/2 merino 1/2 acrylic [nice and soft], and knits up pretty damn chunky) looks pretty good, too. going to rip back the collar because I made it too tight, but other than that... depending on how much time I spend on it tonight, I may finish it.

it's REALLY WARM to have it all on my lap, though.
